Subject: Kuykendall History

<<File: ATT00000.htm>>
Forest,

I for one would be very interested in purchasing the Kuykendall book. I
noticed that the note left was from 1997. But have just found out here
resent that my great great grandmother was Kuykendall. Her oldest son Collin
Westfall Duncan's death cert. has his mother listed as Bashbee Kerkendall.
The family bible just as E. B. Duncan. Family stories have her being full
Cherokee. But as of yet have not found that to be true. I know she was born
in Kentucky. Was purchased or traded for a wagon load of corn and several
head of horses in Missouri. At least 2 of her 5 children were born in Boone
Co., Missouri. Her third child was named Martha Tegrisy Duncan, she died
shortly have child birth in 1877. Census say she was born in Missouri. Don't
know where she died but in Eastland Co., Texas or Oklahoma not sure.

Bashbee and her last child F. A. Duncan died in Lavaca Co., Texas (we
think). That is where her husband, W. B. Duncan married his second wife and
had his last child. I have noticed in the Kuykendall names that Desmond is a
family name, as well as, Owen. My Great grandfather was William Owen Duncan.
And my grandfather was Elma Desmond Duncan. I'm sure that these names follow
the Kuykendall name lines.

Back to the subject at hand. If there is some way I can get a copy of the
Kuykendall please let me know.

Margie Duncan

Subject: Elizabeth KUYKENDALL - TEXAS (circa 1850)

Can't tell who I'm sending this message to - Forest OR Wallace but never
the less, here it is.

My compliments on your website and the "volume" of information you have
amassed concerning the "K" Family.

We are seeking the parents of Elizabeth KUYKENDALL (b.abt 1850-1860) of
Panola Co,TX area.... spouse of my wife's g-gfthr Vinson M. CRAWFORD
(b.abt 1858) in Rusk Co,TX. We know that the Elizabeth we are seeking is
NOT the Elizabeth Kuykendall (b.abt 1840-1844) dau of John KUYKENDALL
(b.12 Dec 1796) and spouse Mary "Polly" KEY (b.abt 1803). That
particular Elizabeth m. Angus Sterling PRICE.

The evidence we have concerning the name Elizabeth KUYKENDALL was
obtained from the funeral home that buried Vinson & Elizabeth's son -
Collie W. CRAWFORD (b.4 Nov 1882;d.21 Dec 1954).... and their records
indicated parents of Collie as:
Vinson Crawford and Elizabeth Kuykendall

It's OKAY TO POST this information. Perhaps someone will have a lead on
the connection of the CRAWFORD and KUYKENDALL families in East Texas
between 1800-1870.

Thank you for the "information presented" and for the willingness to
share the info with others.

Subject: Continuation of Kuykendall Line

I have some info on descendants down from gen (8) Gibson Kuykendall and his
second wife, Martha.
Gibson's son by Martha, (9)John H. Kuykendall, is my GGfather. The only
different info I have from what Velma's list is John's wife, the mother of
(10)Robert F Kuykendall. (10)Robert's death certificate lists his mother as
Catherine Birch, not Mary S. what is your source for (8)John's wife's name?

(9)John H. Kuykendall and (10) Robert F. Kuykendall are buried next to each
other in Cloud Chief Cemetery, Cloud Chief, Washita Co., OK. The gravestones
put (9)John's death on Jan 17, 1916 and (10)Robert's death on Feb 2, 1943.

The line should continue:

8[73] Gibson Kuykendall 1802-
*2nd wife of Gibson [73]Kuykendall
+ Martha Kuykendall
9 Fulema Kuykendall 1838-
9 Joseph A Kuykendall 1839-1913
+ Sally A. Mickleborough 1841-1893 and (10) children of
9 Wyatt H. Kuykendall 1843-
***Here is where (9)John's line takes off***
9 John H. Kuykendall 1847-1916
+ Catherine Birch
10 Effie B. Kuykendall 1872
10 Robert F. Kuykendall 1874-1943
+ Clara Bell Graves 1877-1957
11 J.R.(Raymond)Kuykendall 1904-
+ Tena Pauley 1905-1985
11 Robert F. Kuykendall Jr. 1911-1982
+ Ruth Hooley 1905-1985
11 Lara Juanita Kuykendall 1914-1973
+ John Edward (Elmer)Rowan 1907-1965
12 Clara Margaret Rowan 1945-
12 John Edward Rowan Jr. 1946-
12 Ramona Rowan 1947-
12 David Robert Rowan 1948-1970
12 William Ernest Rowan 1950-**This is me**
+ Jo Ann Nettleton 1948-
13 William Ernest Rowan Jr. 1971-
<> Deirdre Sweeney (unwed)
14 Keller Paige Sweeney 1997-
13 Heather Lynne Rowan 1975-

That's the end of my line so far. Gen (12) on down are still living except
for (12) David Robert Rowan. I don't know what the etiquette is for posting
the names, etc. of living people. I certainly don't mind if this info finds
it's way onto your site.

Thanks for your site. Between you and Will and Barb Barnhart, I've been able
to trace my line all the way back to Luur in Holland in the 1500's.

Subject: Re: Lost Kuykendall- ok to post

Thank you for your quick response! I actually have already begun to do
some of the things you suggested. I have looked at the census indexes
for the years you suggested, and gotten townships and household numbers,
but I haven't made it back to look at the microfilms yet.
I have, however, found some other interesting things. In a book on
Conway County, Arkansas marriages for 1860 I found Peter Kuykendall age
65 married Martha E. Murphey age 36. So, an old man, I'll assume
Adam's(6) son, married a young woman. I also found a book on Conway
County, Arkansas wills: Peter Kuykendall; wife Martha Elizabeth; wit.
G.S. Cunningham and Joshua Moses. Written 4-18-1860, probate
7-13-1863. Book A:123, 224-227. My great-grandfather was born
3-20-1863. Is it possible that my great-grandfather, Peter Andrew, was
born just four months before his father died, leaving a young widow with
a newborn baby? That could explain why a lone woman relocated some 100
miles with a young child. I am going to the Conway County courthouse
next week hoping to find the will and hoping the probate lists my
great-grandfather as an heir. If it does then I have found my place;
otherwise, I will keep searching.
When I do get this connected, however it may turn out to be, I will send
you all the information about this branch of Kuykendalls. We do have
some formerly famous country stars. Royce and Jeannie Kuykendall, also
known as the "Kendalls" were famous in the late 70's or early 80's for
their #1 hit "Heaven's Just a Sin Away." I think they are still in
Nashville, but we haven't heard from them in several years.
Hope to be in touch with you again soon.

Subject: Please Post - Edward Kuykendall(1809-1869)Ohio

Last year I posted a query regarding Edward -- since
then I've changed my e-mail address and want to be
certain I can be reached if anyone knows the parents
of:

Edward Kuykendall (10 February 1809-21 July 1869)
married Melinda Fisher on 8 June 1843, Columbiana
county, Ohio. In the 1860 census they were living in
Putnam county, Ohio (he 50, she 35) near Benjamin
Cuykendall (age 58) and Sarah (age 54). In the next
two listings are John and Elnora Cuykendall and Levi
and Arvilda, in their early twenties.

Other family members have mentioned he was most likely
the son of Daniel born 1768 in Orange county, NY, who
was the son of Benjamin and Ann (Jones) -- but I've
found nothing to prove nor disprove.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Subject: Kuykendalls

I tried to drop you a line from the Kuykendall family web page, but I couldn't
get any of the links to work.

My great grandmother was a Cherokee Indian in the North Georgia mountains.
All my life, I've been told that her name was Kuykendall. I've always found
this odd, since I know of no Dutch or German ancestry in my family. I have
both evidence against and evidence for the existence of Cherokee Kuykendalls,
though. The evidence against is that I've perused the Cherokee rolls every
chance I've gotten, and I've never found a Kuykendall or any similar or
phonetically equivalent spelling anywhere in them. The evidence for is that
my sister did a summer's worth of mission work in Stilwell, OK, in the '60s,
and she said that two little old ladies (sisters) who ran the local general
store were named Kuykendall.

So, bottom line, do you or yours know of any Kuykendalls who were Cherokees
who lived in the mountains of northern Georgia and/or western South Carolina
in the first half of the 19th century? I've been trying to find information
for years, and any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to post this, along with my e-mail address, on the Kuykendall web
page if you wish.

Many, many thanks,
David Cochran

Subject: Storm

My Gr. Son Mike & I were alone here in My Home. He is 18 , This was about some of the bad storms of 98. My Husband was over at his Mother's feeding the chickens. & doing a few of the chores he does every day , She is widowed ,& 83 Yr.'s old , living alone. It started looking bad in the sky to the west. Nothing had been forecast except for a few shower's & thunder storms.
Mike and I were sitting at the table in the kitchen , when we noticed the wind was picking up. We looked out the door, and it was getting darker all the time. I noticed that a tarp was flapping out by a shed where we keep our jeep. So Mikey & I went out to try to tie it down enough that it wouldn't get tore up in the wind.
We looked up at the sky, and he said It's a bad one Grandma, Limbs had started falling, the wind was roaring like a freight train. I told him to run for the house , before we got hit in the head with something. A hard gust of wind hit just as I started in the door. Mikey grabbed me and pulled me in.
By that time big tree's were twisting and cracking, falling. some looked twisted off close to the ground , Other's maybe 30 ft hi, ( during the mean time ) we opened the kitchen window just enough to let the wind to keep from forming a vacuum , then went to the back bedroom , ( No Basemen ) , Opened the window in the bathroom to the east. It rained in a lot, but I can clean up water , if it saves my house, Mikey & I sit on the bed, he ask me what to do. I said if you hear a sound like the house starting to give. We will grab the heavy mattress off the bed & put it over us, on the floor, & hang on to it for dear life, It would protect us from flying objects.
We could still hear the tree's cracking and falling, Then it gradually started to let up. When we felt brave enough, we went back to the Kitchen, Look out the window. The rain that had been pouring like a white sheet was letting up, The roaring was gone, Looking up across our hill side, their was two Paths that it had taken out. It looked like it had went around the house, up the hill like two separate storms. I looked at Mikey , I told him we were very lucky. then as usual I came up with , ( You know it looks like Paul Bunyan and Blue his OX, had went up through there, just singing and making a path for each one of them.
As of now we truly have a mess to clean up this spring. Tree's laying this way and that. We already have brush piles stacked everywhere. Oh well , the rabbits will have a place to nest. and We are safe, We have that to be thankful for. God does protect us during the times we are in danger.
Ellen ( Kirkendall ) Cunningham.
