Subject: Selli Roos

Hi,
I just noticed the Kuykendall Web site. I liked it. Unfortunately, I
have only a tenuous link to the family.
One of my ancestors married into the family after her first husband
died. I saw her listed as Sara Roos, wife of Leur Kuykendall. Perhaps
you would find my information helpful.
I have not followed the Kuykendall line too far in the east, but I
know the family was quite prominent in Virginia's effort to establish a
county in what is now western Pennsylvania.
The following is information extracted from my account of the life
of Andreas Neu - who is usually identified in American records as Neigh
or some variant spelling. The Andries/Andrew born in 1750 was my
ancestor.

On June 6, 1750, Selli gave birth to Andries -- Andrew in subsequent
records. Andrew was baptized Nov. 26, 1752 at the Dutch Reformed Church
in Smithfield, Pa. (7)
Andreas died before his son's baptism. On Feb. 2, 1752, the
Reformed church records list the marriage of "Luer Kuykendal, widower of
Lena Consales, to Sara Roos, widow of Andries Ny, both dwelling here.''
On May 20, 1753, Abram, son of Luer Kuykendal and Sell Roos, was
baptized at the Smithfield church.
The Kuykendal/Nye family then moved just across the Delaware River
to Knowlton Township, New Jersey. Tax records list Lewer Kikendol there
in 1773 (he appears as Leward Cuikendal in 1774). (8)
Numerous Kuykendals lived at "the Forks of the Delaware,'' as the
area around Easton, Pa., was known. Several of these, including Luer,
moved to the frontier in western Pennsylvania in the mid-1770s. Andrew
and Samuel Nye followed. "Lewis'' Kuykendall died before June 13, 1789,
when his will was proved. His wife is listed as Sealley. The will was
filed in Washington County. (10)
(7) "Collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical
Society,'' page 95. (8) The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Vol.
40, page 131. (10) "Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania Publications,
Vol. 6,'' page 144.

From my account of Andrew's life:
Andrew appears in both Pennsylvania and Virginia records during the
time of the boundary dispute, which was resolved in the early 1780s.
Andrew may have favored the Virginia side of the dispute because his
mother's in-laws, the Kuykendalls, were very active in the Yohogania
County government. Andrew maintained close ties with the Kuykendals.
He was executor of Lewis Kuykendall's will, dated June 13, 1789 and
filed in Washington County. Lewis' wife is listed as Sealley. (11)
(11) "Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania Publications, Vol. 6,'' page
144.

Here's a possible identification of Selli:
Selli Roos may possibly be the Caecilia Roos who was born Feb. 1,
1720 in Somerset County, N.J. (6) Selli was an abbreviation used by
other Cecilias. Selli's name is spelled Sealley in her second husband's
will. Caecilia was baptized at the Lutheran church at the Raretons and
her family attend services there for many years. Her father was Andreas
Roos, who emigrated from Germany around 1710. Selli's son is listed as
Andrew Rose Nye in some records. As noted before, children were usually
given names of grandparents, so "Andrew Rose" may be named in honor of
"Andreas Roos." No further record of "Caecilia'' Roos has been found.
(6) "The Palatine Families of New York, 1710," pages 798 and 799.

( I'm sure you are very familiar with spelling irregularities. I
followed the spelling used in the document cited.)
If you are interested I can dig up further references to the
Kuykendals form my records. I think I have specific references to
official proceedings. Two valuable sources for the activities of the
pioneers in western Pa. are the Pennsylvania Archives series and
"Records of the District of West Augusta, Ohio County and Yohogania
County, Va." I don't know what church they attended. If I could find
that out, I'd be ecstatic.
Actually, this is the area that could help me the most. If you have
any hints on where the Kuykendals attended church in western
Pennsylvania, please let me know.
Despite my slim connection to the family, knowledge of the early
Kuykendalls can fill in some holes in my knowledge about my own family .
I hope some of this proves useful. Feel free to use it in any way you
want to.

Subject: OK to Pass Along

Hi -

I am a descendant of Jacob and Rachel Coykendall of Ontario Co. NY, Cuyahoga
Co. OH, and Wayne Co. MI. Rachel's maiden name may have been Quick. I am
attaching two files of descendants and notes. PLEASE read the notes for
children of Jacob, as some of the children I am not sure of (and different
sources give different children). The second file I have attached is of John
Coykendall married to Mary Brasher. This could be the same John, son of
Jacob, with a second wife named Eliza.

I have not been able to determine the father of this Jacob. Any help will be
appreciated. I already have the Dutch church records and he may be one of
those, but I just don't know which one.

Rachel's maiden name of Quick is from the daughter Sarah's christening record.
BUT again, I am not sure this is the right Sarah, Jacob, and Rachel. Sarah's
gravestone states her birth date different from the christening record but
within a year apart (see notes for Sarah). I feel sure that my Sarah's
parents were named Jacob and Rachel based on the land records found.

Cindy Schroeder

Rec. 2 OCT 1856 (66-121)
Esther Kissinger (granddau. of Julia Palmiter Parrish) thought that Julia's family once lived in an area called Cripple Creek, OH. She had also heard the story that 5 brothers in the Palmiter family originally came from Ireland (supposedly Joshua's sons). This story was also in other branches of the family in Michigan - desc. of Elias' brothers. [15]

Elias & Mary Palmiter to David L. Palmiter (should be David L.
Parmenter)
By my calculations Elias' property in Williams Co. OH was owned by the Burds in the 1900s. Mrs. Phyllis Burd said that part of a gravestone dated 1845 was plowed up 1/2 mile west. The property to the east was the town of Northwest built by Jacob Kintigh in 1869. [19]
Elias was the owner of lot 13 in the Palmer Cemetery in Camden Township. It is not known which of his family is buried there - his second wife or one of the four children that died young. [25]

Cemetery records belonging to Roxanna (Fairman) Kinyon were found behind a cupboard during remodeling in the 1970s. These records show that El Palmiter purchased a lot in Kinyon Cemetery. The records do not have a date, nor name of person buried there. It is assumed that Mary, first wife of Elias, is buried there. Henry Forshee family stones are located there now. [6]

8S. Sarah Booker SHEMELY
Her mother was supposed to have run off with a Methodist minister and no one including Sarah's daughter Eliza would ever mention her name. She was looked upon with utter contempt. Sarah had a brother William, but Eliza's daughter Laura said that only Sarah and her father came west with the Kimmel family in a covered wagon. Her father remarried Elizabeth Feather, and they had a son Lewis. Lewis married Eliza Williams, and they had 3 children: Mary, Sam, and Allie. [13]

OBITUARY
Ezra Palmiter was born at Bedford, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, October 6, 1838 and died November 1, 1897, after an illness of fifteen days.
He was married to Nancy Wood, August 14, 1865, and settled in their present home in June, 1868. To them were born seven children, six of whom are living. Mr. Palmiter was the oldest of five children, all of whom survive him. His death causes the loss of an honest, able-minded citizen, a good neighbor and friend, and a loving and indulgent father and husband. His close attachment, during his last illness, to his attending physician, speaks much in favor of Dr. Esple.
While the home, which has hitherto been a happy one, cannot forget the shadow that has settled over it, yet we know that the wound our father dealeth has a tender touch and the remaining family extend their most sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who assisted them in their bereavement.

31. William J. PALMITER
It is believed that his mother was Mary Brooks. His death certificate says so. However, the Bible records says he was born 20 SEP 1846. Also in the Bible it says Mary Brooks died 20 March 1846, and Elias married Mary Corwin in June 1846. The Bible record of Elias' marriage to Mary Corwin is correct according to Wayne Co. MI marriage records. A possible answer is that William was really born before (possibly 20 SEP 1845) or when Mary Brooks died 20 March 1846 (notice that only the month is different). He would not have been the son of Mary Corwin, as his brother Ezra's obituary states that Ezra was the oldest of five children, all of whom survived Ezra in 1897. The five children were Ezra, Anson, Albert, Julia, and William. The half-siblings were not included in Ezra's obituary. His gravestone says 1846; the 1900 census says SEP 1846; his death certificate indicates SEP 1846.

Bud's first [sic] wife's name was Alice. They were separated or divorced, and she died before Bud married the second [sic] time. [4]
Bud told his son of the Irish background. Dale believes the name was spelled Palmitier (French) originally. A Palmitier man and his wife came from France to visit the Palmiters in Reading, MI. They said they were related. This was 1878-1888. [4]
Dale Palmiter says to see President Buchanan's book - his trip through Kansas and Missouri. Almond "Bud" is mentioned as Buddy Butterfield (his mother's maiden name) at the Billings Trading Post. [4]
No stones on his or his last wife's graves - they did not want any. [4]

Good Evening Forest
Found your web page and thought it was interesting. Searched all through
your records and found nothing on my great-grandfather or my grandfather.
Thought maybe you could steer me in the right direction. Here are some
facts:

Seymour Kuykendall, born 10/22/1850 and was married to Susan Catherine
Baldwin, born 04/20/1851

Oliver Jackson Kuykendall, born 03/08/1884 and was married to Charity Pope,
born 05/11/1890

Oliver would be my grandfather, and he was raised in Moorefield, Hardy
County, West Virginia. I do not know where Seymour was born, but I do know
that it is only 25 miles south of Romney, West Virginia.
This information came from my grandfathers bible, and I do have the rest
of the tree out of this bible.
Hope you can help.
Thank You
Bill Kuykendall

Hi.
My name is Arlene Lydia Kuyrkendall Stocks. I live in Iowa and I'm very new to
this computer stuff. Age is 52 and I work for the school system here. I have
been at family tree stuff for over twenty years now , but only take ambitious
streaks so when I'm not in a streak all my stuff is tucked away.
Since I've been playing with the computer I found my name on a page that says
I have a private family tree thing ( don't know what that means) and I could
not click in it to find out anything about myself?
I have wrote to a number of people about the family tree --- Velma Winn
several years ago( I have almost all she wrote) ---Carol Chaney , in Ill. who
is a (probably) distant counsin of mine. She has a Kuykendall reunion up that
direction the first week-end of August every yr. --- I wrote to a Marshall
Early Kuykendall from Tx. in 1991 ( couple letters I think)
In a book by a Dr. Kuykendall (1919) there is a reference to the part of the
family I'm in on page 176 and that is the only place I found anything although
that is just a quick look .
My grandfather is John Vanmeter Kuyrkendall
My great grandfather is Joseph Hiranm Kuyrkendall
I have more Info I can share if you like

My father's family is from Algood, TN. Into which branch of the Kuykendall's
would we fall? His father's name is Charles (Charlie) Kuykendall, born around
1900 or so.

Thanks.....fascinating page!!!

I am descended from Peters son Jesse, nowhere on your page did I find a list
of all of Peters children. Did I miss this?? I found the discussion on the
Kuykendall book very interesting because of all of the research I have done
on the internet on various families, the Kuykendall family has been one of
the easiest to document.
Our line was one of the group to go to Texas and I have info if anyone is
interested.

Forest,

Sorry to be slow in answering your letter, but I was out of town and just
received it. I went to your web site and I am very impressed with all of
your good information. I would be pleased if you would like to include my
letter.

My interests lie in first determining what the relationship of my Wallace
family to the Kuykendall family truly is. I have become convinced that it
is a close one. Family lore has indicated that our ggg grandmother Sarah
Wallace was born Sarah Hardin. However, many years of dedicated research
has failed to turn up a single Sarah Hardin who married Samuel Wallace.
Samuel Wallace was in the Tennessee Militia, and Benjamin Hardin co-signed
a voucher paid to Samuel. This is the only record we find which ties Sarah
to the Hardins. Other than the fact that Samuel and Sarah's first son was
named Benjamin, and her grandson is quoted as saying "My grandmother was a
Hardin..." no evidence can be found.

There is mounting evidence of a very close connection to the Kuykendall
family. In Webster County, Kentucky, there is a small family cemetery
called Granny's Hill. It is on the farm that was the home of Captain James
Wallace, the son of Samuel and Sarah. Captain James is buried there, and
there has never been any indication that anyone other than his family
members are there. Last April about fifteen or more of us were on the
hill, which are are in the process of restoring to the best of our ability.
Only two stones were standing, and they were leaning against trees. We
were probing and digging to try to locate others. We found Captain James'
stone, as well as the stone for his daughter, Mary Wallace Kuykendall, the
wife of Beuford Kuykendall, who was the son of Simon T. Kuykendall. (We
couldn't find Beuford's stone, however, I think it must be there.) A
number of others were rediscovered. Late in the day, one of the young
cousins was examining some old fieldstone markers. We had looked at them
previously, and finding no markings, thought that they were probably the
markers of slaves, who we have been told are buried there. His young eyes
spotted some markings. On very close examination, it is clear that the
initials "S. T. K." were scratched into the stone. It must be the resting
place of old Simon T. Kuykendall, for which ancestors have been searching
for more than one hundred years. Next to it there is another, shaped the
same, but with no discernable marking, which we a suspect may be a spouses
stone. This would be one of the Thompson sisters.

We knew of the marriage of Syresa Kuykendall and Elijah Wallace, who was
the son of Samuel and Sarah. We knew of the Buford K./Mary W. marriage,
and the marriage of William Featherstone Kuykendall to another of Captain
James' daughters, Lucy Wallace. But to find Simon T. in this cemetery,
where no one other that immediate family is buried, was a total surprise.

I had entertained the thought that our granny Sarah Wallace might have been
Sarah Kuykendall for a long time. This new information made it seem much
more likely. The logical answer is that she might have been an unrecorded
daughter of John Kuykendall and Rebecca Hardin. (She would have been a
Hardin, as her grandson stated.) She would also have been the aunt of
Simon T. Kuykendall, since he is fairly certain to have been the grandson
of John and Rebecca Kuykendall.

This brings up another question. Whose child was Simon T.? I know that
Velma Kuykendall, and a number of other researchers show him as the son of
Simon of Sumner County, Tennessee. A Kuykendall cousin, descended from
Simon T., has researched every known lead that is given for that
conclusion, and it does not make an air tight case. In fact, from the
Sumner records, I can only be really sure of two descendants for Simon.
Those would be daughters Rebecca and Martha. There is considerable
evidence, through deeds, that he did not have a son, Matthew. This seems
to arise from confusion of the spelling of "Martha" as "Marthew". (If you
are interested in the argument, I can supply details...long story!) I can
find no record that connects Simon to Simon T.! I am wondering why it is
not more likely that he was the son of Simon's brother, Joseph. We know
that Joseph did have a son, Simon, but there is no data whatsoever on him.
We do find Joseph in the same area of Kentucky as Simon T.. John and
Rebecca's son, Joseph Kuykendall signed the permission for the marriage of
Sarah Wallace's daughter Mary. Samuel was dead at the time of the
marriage, and the paper is signed by Sarah and Joseph Kuykendall. If he
were Sarah's brother, this would make perfect sense.

There are even more incidental facts that make the relationship seem
likely, but I am sure you will already have great difficulty in following
my rambling. This may be one that will never be solved, because the proof
no longer exists. I keep hoping that with enough contacts and questions,
someone will discover a long unknown Bible, letter, or will, which will
tell us the facts. Dreamer, huh?

If any of this interests you, I will supply any information I have. I have
copies of the marriage permission, with Joseph's signature, a picture of
the S. T. K. tombstone, and other miscelleanous information. I have good
information on the descendants of Simon T. Kuykendall, particularly the
ones that involve the Wallace family. (I also have a picture of Harry
Kuykendall, a descendant of Simon T., standing over the stone. He has
searched for most of his adult life for this site, and the beaming face
really tells a story. He recently had knee surgery, and is on a walker.
In spite of this, he climbed the hill, [there is no road or easy access]
with considerable pain and risk, just to see the stone.)

If you are still with me, thanks for reading all this. Any help you can
offer will be deeply appreciated.

Subject: John KUYKENDALL and Rebecca HARDIN

I am attempting to find information on John KUYKENDALL (ca 1722-1763) and
his wife, Rebecca HARDIN, (ca 1730-1796). In particular, I would like to
know whether the family of their son, John II, was in Washington County,
Tennessee in 1782. A deed was executed in that county by John KUYKENDALL
to a JENKINS, and was witnessed by a Samuel WALLACE and others.

My research has shown only four children for the couple: John, ca 1750,
Benjamin, ca 1751, Joseph, ca 1752, and Simon, no date of birth. I would
love to hear whether any record has been found for additional children. It
seems unusual for a family to be so small during that period of history. I
suspect that there were others, possibly some girls.

I am searching for the family of my ggg-grandmother, Sarah, who married
Samuel WALLACE. There is strong circumstancial evidence that she was
either a HARDIN or a KUYKENDALL. It seems much more likely that her name
was KUYKENDALL, and her mother a HARDIN. She was closely associated with
both the KUYKENDALLS and the Knob Creek (Benjamin) HARDINS.

This search has gone on for several generations, and the discovery of some
new burial sites has shed new light on the relationships. I would
appreciate any information that can help answer the question.

Subject: The Kuykendall connections

Dear Wallace:

I found you on the web and am pleased to know that you are updating G.B
Kuykendall's book.

My name is Jacob Luerson Kuykendall, Jr., and I am trying to trace back to the
original Jacob, where my name come from. I was born in Hayward, WI on 9/6/34

My father way Jacob Luerson Kuykendall born in Couderay Wi on 10/20/1917
His father was Fred Kuykendall born in Richland Center, WI on 6/13/1870
His father was Jacob Luerson Kuykendall born location UNK on 2/13/1848

I have a record of the Fred's 9 brothers and sisters and their children.

In Fred's records, I found a signed picture of G.B.Kuykendall, M.D., from
Pomeroy, Washington. (no date).. Apparently Fred and George were in contact
and I am interested in finding out the relationship. This could be the link
back to the original Jacob.

If you would like a copy of my records, I would be happy to provide them.

I now live in the Boston area but was born on the Lac Courte Oriellis Chippewa
Indian reservation and have both Chippewa and Sioux Indian on my grandmothers
side and am 1/4 Indian. I also have records that go back to Zen-O-Wa, my 100%
Sioux grandmother who was captured and adoptedf into the Chippewa Tribe where
I was born.

I can also make a copy of GB Kuykendall's picture if you have an interest.

Best regards,

Jacob Luerson Kuykendall, Jr.

Subject: Pronunciation of "Kuykendall" -- PLEASE POST

What was the original pronunciation of the name "Kuykendall" or, perhaps, "van Kuykendaal?"

Some say it was pronounced, "Kirk-en-dahl." Others insist this was a newer pronunciation than an earlier pronunciation, approximately "Ki-ken-dahl" (long "i").

If the pronunciation "Kirk-en-dahl" is more recent, then it was in use as early as the time of the French-Indian war of the mid to late 1750's.

George Washington's letters as Colonel in the colonial British army refer once to the spelling "Kuykendall" and in six letters to the "Kirkendalls."

Colonel Washington gives instructions as to what ought to be done at "Kirkendalls" in letters addressed to officers:

1. "Captain James Hamilton of the Fairfax Militia" ordering him to take a "post at Kirkendalls" at "the South Branch," dated May 17th, 1756, from Winchester

2. "Captain Nicholas Minor of the Fairfax Militia" whom Captain Hamilton was to relieve is ordered by Colonel Washington: "I would have you remain at Kirkendalls with your party until Colonel Peytons return to the Branch," also dated May 17th, 1756, from Winchester

3. "Captain Robert McKenzie of the Virginia Regiment": "When you remove over to Pearsalls you must send a Subaltern and fifteen men over to Kirkendalls Fort," July 13th, 1756, from Fort Cumberland

4. "Lieutenant Colonel Adam Stephen, at Fort Cumberland": "I am sorry to hear you even mention recalling Capt. McKenzie from his post. It must have been an extraordinary occasion that would have reconciled me to that proceeding, which would have left Cox's, Pearsalls, and Kirkendalls forts quite defenceless . . . I have, in order to strengthen the several garrisons that maintain the communications with Fort Cumberland, ordered Captain Bell to march to Cox's, and there remain with twenty men, while the rest of his company is equally divided, one part to strengthen Ashby's, the other to protect the inhabitants at Kirkendalls," August 5th, 1756, Winchester

5. "Captain Thomas Waggoner on the South-Branch": "You must therefore, notwithstanding all the orders which have heretofore been given, immediately despatch Captain Bell, with his whole company to Captain Cox's fort; where he is to remain himself with twenty men, taking command of said fort, and escorting all Expresses, wagons, &c, to and from Fort Cumberland, as far as Ashby's and Pearsalls. The rest of his men he is to divide into two equal parts; one of which, with his Ensign, is to march to, and be stationed at Kirkendalls, for the protection of the people there," August 5th, 1756, Winchester

6. "Captain Robert McKenzie -- at Cox's Fort": "The remainder of Captain Bells' men are to be divided into two parties, one of which is to strengthen the garrison at Ashby's, for the aforesaid purposes, while the other with his Ensign, remains at Kirkendalls, for the protection of that Settlement," August 5th, 1756, Winchester.

The seventh is a letter from Colonel George Washington at Winchester, dated August 13, 1756, addressed "To the commanding officer at Kuykendalls Fort."

Washington's letter to Waggoner (above) refers to "Kirkendalls fort."

Presumably, "Kuykendalls Fort" and "Kirkendalls fort" is the same, stone, Indian fort which still stands at one of the old Kuykendall farm sites on the South Branch of the Potomac not far from Romney, West Virginia.

It seems likely that in the first six letters, Washington spelled the name "Kuykendall" as it sounded when pronounced: "Kirkendall." Later, upon becoming aware of how the family concerned spelled their name, Washington spelled it correctly as "Kuykendall."

Over the past 20 years or so, we have been blessed with a number of outstanding K-Family researchers. A few have passed on and a few are no longer active but it is rewarding to see some of them now on the Internet. Velma Winn has been active on Prodigy and now the net for some time. Recently, we see notes from Emily Stowell, Betty Price, and Marshall Kuykendall. I was also interested to see a grandson of Herbert Smith. I would love to have a copy of the file of his work.

Web pages are a fantiastic media for interchanging genealogical information but they can be equally effective in distributing mis-information. The folks named above have a lot of experience in separating facts from opinions and assumptions and can serve well as monitors. I urge all to take advantage of their knowledge and professionalism to see that this forum maintains good credibility.

To tell you a little bit about the Kuykendalls of North Carolina of which you are a part, there are two Matthew Kuykendall born in NC in 1758. Let me explain:
There is Matthew Kuykendall born 9 Feb 1758 in Mecklenburg Co. NC. He deid 15 Aug 1841 in DeSota Co. Miss. on 11 May 1780 he married Nancy Johnson (b. 10 July 1765 in SC - d. 4 Sept 1825 in Franklin Co. TN. This Matthew is the son of Abraham (1719-1812) and Elizabeth (surname unknown) of Buncombe (now Henderson) Co. NC.

He had a son Matthew Jr b. 17 Feb 1804 in TN d. 15 Jan 1856 Lawrence, Ark. md. 6 Aug 1820 Rachel Lamb b. 1807 d. Dec 1869.

Matthew Jr. had a son William T. b. 1840 Tenn.

In 1830, Matthew Jr moved from Tn to Mississippi. In 1842 Matthew Jr moved to Green or Lawrence Co. Ark.

Now, the second Matthew Kuykendall was born 24 Oct 1758 in Anson (now Mecklenburg) Co. NC. He died 25 Sept 1845 in Butler Co. Ky. He married 1781 in Burke Co. NC to Jane Harden b. ca 1768 in Mecklenburg Co. NC d/o John and Elizabeth (Kuykendall) Harden. His application for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War in on file in the Archives in Washington, DC. At the time of enlistment, he lived in the York District SC. After the war, he lived near the Virginia/North Carolina line in Burke Co. NC. He was there in 1782. He moved to Kentucky about 1800. He was the first Sheriff of Butler Co. Ky. He was the son of Peter and Mary (Hampton) Kuykendall. Peter left a will written in 1783 in Washington Co. TN naming his brother Abraham as Administrator.
If you are familiar with Velma K. Winn's volume of Books, you can find a copy of his pension application (also available from the National Archives) as well as his will (also available from the Reg. of Deeds office in Butler Co. KY).

He had a son Matthew, Jr. b. 5 July 1794 in Tenn.d. 11 June 1865 in Butler Co. Ky. md. 1 Dec 1819 in Butler Co. Ky to Martha B. Talbert b 8 May 1804 Ky d. 8 May 1873.

Matthew Jr. had a son William b. Kentucky of whom I had no vital statistic. His siblings were born between 1820 and 1845. I believe him to be your William S. Kuykendall b. 22 Mar 1821 in Butler Co. KY and from there as you have in your letter.

I would like to have your comments.

son of Jacob Van Kuykendall (b.1683 at Kingston NY - d. bef 1744 Monroe Co. Pa.) and 2nd wife Sarah Westvael. This Abraham wrote his will 20 Feb 1777 in Hampshire Co. Va. he mar. 1st Trenny Claypool, widow of George Claypool. Abraham md. 2nd Catharina/Catherine Van Meter Harness, widow of Michael Harness (she is listed in Women Patriots recognized for public service in Hampshire Co. Va.) In Abraham's will, he names his beloved wife Catherine, stepson Jeremiah Claypool, stepson Isaac Harness, stepdaughter Sarah Harness, Abraham Kuykendall son of Nathaniel Kuykendall (1/2 of his lands on Peters Creek over the mountains on the Ohio), Abraham Kuykendall, son of Henry Kuykendall 1/2 lands on Peters Creek over the mountains on the Ohio. (Abraham of the will's) mother Sarah Kuykendall. Sole executors to be wife Catherine, friends Samuel Dew and Henry Kuykendall.

The above Sarah Harness married Luke Decker, the son of John and Dinah (Kuykendall) Decker. Dinah being the d/o Jacob Van Kuykendall, and brother of the above Abraham will. Jeremiah Claypool married Blondina Kuykendall d/o Nathaniel, also brother of the above Abraham will.

Luke and Sarah (Harness) Decker had a son Isaac Decker who married Barbara Kuykendall, d/o Abraham and Elizabeth (Fiddler) Kuykendall, s/o Nathaniel, s/o Jacob Van. Abraham was born in Virginia 1760 died 1830 Knox Co. Ind. Abraham and Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah, married Nathaniel Harness s/o Adam and Sarah (Kuykendall) Harness, d/o Nathaniel Kuykendall who died 1798 in Hampshire Co. Va.

Abraham Kuykendall, son of Henry (mentioned in the will) was born estimated ca 1760 based on the only documented date of birth of his siblings, Henry Kuykendall, Jr. b. 5 Nov 1765 in Hampshire Co. W. Va. Henry went to Ohio 1798/9 where he died 30 Nov 1818. His son Isaac was born 1787 in Va. It is believed that Abraham died in Virginia.

Abraham's father, Henry was b. ca 1743/5 lived most of his life in Hampshire Co. WV went to Ohio and then to Bourbon Co. Ky where he died 1796. Wife's given name was Rebecca. Henry was the son of John and Elizabeth (Brink) Kuykendall. John died 1780 Hampshire Co. WVA. He was the son of Jacob and Sarah (Westvael) Van Kuykendall.

Another son of Jacob Van Kuykendall and Sarah Westvael is Jacobus bpt 17 Aug 1716 DRC will prob. 1746 Morris Co. NJ. named his Uncle Peter as Executor. Jacobus married Alida Dingman. Alida Dingman remarried in 1747 to John Bight/Right in the DRC at Smithfield, Monroe Co. Pa. In 1754, John Right owned land in West Virginia. Jacobus and Alida had 3 children: Sarah, Abram and Jacob. All baptized in the DRC. Abram/Abraham - 13 Jan 1745, no further record; Jacob bapt 1st 27 June 1741 and bapt 2nd 12 July 1747 in Monroe Co. PA. Jacob married his first cousin, Barbara Decker d/o John and Dina (Kuykendall) Decker, d/o Jacob, see previous notes. jacob was captured by the indian and held for some time. Believing him dead, Barbara remarried to James Colvin. Jacob returned and divorced her 17 Feb 1773, it is believed that this was the first divorce in Virginia. (Hampshire Co.)

Many people were researching the Deckers and Kuykendalls in Virginia because of the grants from Lord Fairfax.

It is as plain as the nose on your face, how the Abraham and John Kuykendall of North Carolina got erronesously identified as sons of Matthew and Janetje (Westvael) Kuykendall. Once the earliest researchers got into the Virginia records, since Mathew was there with his brother Jacob, they automatically connected Cornelius and Martije (Westvael) Kuykendall's sons Abraham and John to Matthew.

It's true that Cornelius did not come to North Carolina. His last known documented whereabouts is in the Dutch Reform Church of Smithfield, Monroe Co. PA where they witnessed in 1752 the baptism of their stepson Andries Nye, son of Andrew and Selli (Roos) Nye. The widow, Selli (Roos) Nye married Leur, son of Cornelius. Leur and Sellie also remained in Pa. Their son Cornelius received an undocumented land grant in Northampton Co. Pa. in 1754. (The land was still owned by the Indians and the grant was never issued.)

But Cornelius' widow, Martije "Mary" did come to North Carolina with her sons John bapt 1717 and Abraham bapt 1719, Jacob b. ca 1731 and Peter bapt 1733. Mary and her son Jacob were issued a grant for land in Anson Co. NC in 1753. She married in ca 1763 Mecklenburg Co. NC to Martin Armstrong, an older man than the Surveyor General Martin Armstrong of Burke and Surry Co. NC fame. She with her husband Martin Armstrong and son Jacob Kuykendall sell the grant they received in 1753 in two transactions, both in Tryon Co. NC (now disolved into Lincoln and Rutherford Counties) in 1778 which is the last that is known of her. The last that is known of JacobJames is in Mecklenburg Co. NC where an adminstrator was appointed in 1797 to settle the estate of James Kuykendall. The Adminstrator appointed by the court was Samuel Kuykendall, son of James and Sarah (Coburn) Kuykendall. James/Jacob apparently had no family.

It is also true that Matthew Kuykendall came to North Carolina (Anson Co.) where he received land in 1750/1 as did his son Jacobus later called Cobus and James. Matthew's oldest son Simon apparently did not come to NC as there are no deeds for him in the early records. Matthew's son James died in 1766. James's wife was Sarah Coburn. James and Sarah had a son James, Jr. who died in 1800 York Co. SC. The Administrators for James, Jr.'s estate were Jonathan Kuykendall and Mary Carroll, his siblings.

In the North Carolina records, there are many clues as to the connection of Cornelius and Maritje's sons. Yes, Abraham had brothers James and Peter. It says so in a deed in Mecklenburg Co. NC. It says so in Peter's will in Washington Co. NC (now TN) in 1783. Yes, Abraham's land joined his mother Mary's ( who in 1755 received a grant on n. side of Dutchman's Creek on or near Abraham Kuykendall's line joining James Kuykendall) as did his brother Jacob whose land was two miles from James Kuykendall according to a deed of Samuel Coburn's. (Anson Co. NC. Deed Book C1, pg 366/367 dated 2 April 1757) Samuel Cobron and wife Margaret conveys 319 acres to James Kuykendall "on the Indian Path about two miles from Jacob Kuykendall". Abraham's brother John died in Anson Co. NC in 1766

It is just an opinion of mine, as there is no documented proof, that Mary of that Mary and Jacob Kuykendall deed, is the widow of Cornelius. It is my opinion that she brought her younger children to North Carolina with her deceased husband's brother Matthew and some of his children. It is my opinion (and I must credit the idea to another well known Kuykendall researcher, Eugene L. Kuykendall of New York after I sent him some of my work) that Matthew's wife Jennetje died (she was Mary's sister) and that Matthew married second Mary, the widow of his brother. In 1754 Matthew and Mary conveys the only peace of land granted to Matthew in NC in two parcels, one to Peter Kuykendall and the other to Andrew Hampton. Later Peter and wife Mary sells that land to Andrew Hampton.

One last item, the undated roster of Samuel Coburns men which was called "The Spanish Alarm" and given the date of 1748 by the archivists in Raleigh, NC has now been more thoroughly researched and determined that the first call for men was in NC was in 1753. Based on research of the men on that list, many of them have been documented elsewhere in 1748 which created the need for better research, resulting in the year 1753. While Matthew's son James and Peter were listed as married men, Cornelius's sons, John, Ensign and Abraham, Corporal' s were not listed as either married or single but based on deeds for them in the 1750's it is obvious that there were married. John is lated referred to as Captain John Kuykendall before his death in 1762.

I hope that you will include my information in your book or whatever, instead of following Velma K. Winn's notes that Abraham is the son Matthew. Matthew did not have a son named Abraham nor John. The only baptismal record that is missing is that of Jacobus, son of Cornelius. The records in North Carolina prove that was two Jacobus Kuykendall in Anson Co. NC in 1757 and before. Some records call Jacob, James and some records call James, Cobus.

Subject: Kirkendalls

Hi,
I am in the process of researching the history of my paternal
grandmother's family, the Kirkendalls. The farthest back I can go is to
William Elijah Kirkendall (b. Feb. 15, 1856) who married Sofrona Alice
Elder (b. July 22, 1865, Clay Center, Kansas). Their children were born
in Kansas, also.

I have recently found record of a William and a James Kirkendall who
voted in Kansas in 1855, but now I realize there are MANY Williams!

Does anyone have any clues to help me?
