Chemical & Environmental Sciences Lab
At General Motors, we first developed a set of "Environmental Principles" in 1991 to underscore our company's commitment to keeping environmental stewardship at the forefront of everything we do. Since that time, increasing concerns about global climate and air and groundwater pollution have made this commitment more important than ever. Today, the global regulatory drive is toward "zero"-emission vehicles and high fuel economy. We also are faced with aggressive goals for achieving reductions in the generation of carbon dioxide.
To address these requirements, the Chemical and Environmental Sciences Lab is heavily engaged in the development of new, more environmentally friendly fuels and lubricants to improve powertrain efficiency and reduce emissions in advanced internal-combustion and alternative-powered vehicles. Other key areas of focus are on chemical catalysis for use in low-cost exhaust emission control systems and fuel-cell systems for global vehicles. Additional areas of study include low-emission manufacturing processes, air quality modeling, and life-cycle analyses of vehicle materials. The Lab also has devised highly efficient analytical techniques and test environments to measure emissions and evaluate the effectiveness of General Motors' innovations.
