Biographical Information

I was born in White Salmon, Wash. in 1954, and have lived here all of my life except during the college years and a brief interruption in the mid 70’s. After graduating from college with a degree in electronics,  I worked for a brief time for Pinkerton Security as a guard in a Vancouver defense contracting plant. I then moved back to White Salmon and began working for a local un-named manufacturing firm where I was employed for 25 years, one week, and one day. I then found a need for continuing education, and decided to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering.  I now work for Klickitat County PUD in the Engineering Department. I work for one of the brightest and best Engineer’s I have ever had the pleasure to meet, Jim Smith. I am currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Electrical Engineering. Yes, it IS TOUGH!

Since childhood, I have been interested in airplanes. In 1972 I received my Private Pilot Certificate and joined the USAFX/CAP so “I could fly their planes”. I received my silver pilot’s wings in late 1973, and in April of 1974 was appointed the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (WO4). Then I was assigned the position of Squadron Adjutant of The Dalles Composite Squadron in The Dalles, Oregon. When I went off to college, I transferred to Oregon Wing Headquarters located at the Portland Air National Guard Base. I was attached to Wing HQ for 2 ½ years, and served as the Wing Cadet Activities Officer, and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. I loved every minute of it, and the opportunity to observe the ORANG in action! After moving back to White Salmon, I transferred back to The Dalles Composite Squadron as the Executive Officer and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. In 1980 I received my Commercial Pilot Certificate, and flew after work and on weekends for Hood River Aircraft and Cascade Soaring. During that time, I was promoted to Captain and appointed by Wing HQ to be the Commander of The Dalles Composite Squadron. During my CAP years, I was Air Force qualified as a Search and Rescue Pilot-Aircraft Commander, Aerial Radiological Monitor, and Radio Operator and Instructor. I attended Officer Orientation School at the ORANG Base, and attained the “Master Level” in USAF/CAP training, and upon attending War College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, would have been eligible for promotion to Major. But as with most everything, trying to stay Search and Rescue “Pilot” qualified, attend and conduct weekly squadron meetings, teach aerospace to cadets, attend weekend training, and do everything else while still working, it became necessary to resign in March of 1985. Those were fun years and I wish I could get them back. I learned to have a great respect for the Oregon Wing USAFX/CAP,  Oregon Air National Guard, and the Air Force personnel I became acquainted and worked alongside. Their professionalism and expertise will never be matched, and I salute you all. I miss lunches in the Officer’s Club!

Another thing I did, was join the Bingen, Wash. Police Department as a Reserve in 1978. Later in the year of 1978 I was also commissioned as a Reserve with the White Salmon, Wash. Police Department by then Chief J.C. Stembridge. I worked with the PD off and on as my free time allowed, frequently riding with my friend Patrolman Ned Kindler. In 1990 “New Chief” Ned Kindler of the White Salmon department, thought it would be a good idea if I attended the Reserve Police Academy, so at the age of 36 I did it. I was appointed as the White Salmon Reserve Commander and held that position until 1995 when I resigned, one of the dumber moves I’ve made in my life, now I work for Bill Ward. In late 1999 I was re-instated and stuck with Bruce Brending as my FTO AGAIN. In May of 2000, the two departments merged, and are now called the Bingen-White Salmon Police Department. It is led by Chief Ned Kindler, and Sgt. Bruce Brending is the 2nd in command. There are 8 regular officers, and 3 reserves led by Reserve Cdr. Bill Ward. So far, there haven’t been many negative results of the merger. If anyone ever has any doubts as to the integrity of America’s Police Department’s, they need to spend some time with the officer’s of this department! Ned instills ethics within his department, and is always mindful of the public eye.

In 1976 I married Joyce Hisel, of Vancouver, Washington. I met her in college where she was “studying men”, and we soon became best buddies. In 1979 we had a daughter, Rebecca who is now married and living in Vancouver, and in 1981 we had a son, Jeremy who works for Sunset Drafting and Sunset Cycles in White Salmon. Joyce and I both immensely enjoy our animals (she works for Alpine Veterinary Hospital), and getting away on weekends when we can. We just lost our dog named “Tucker”, and our outside cat named “Blackie”. We have two inside cats “Beau” and “Einstein”, and two ferret's named “Rascal” and "Suzy-Q". You can see their pictures on the pets page. All of the animals except Suzy-Q are Alpine rejects. When we go in our motor home, we are often accompanied by Beau, as he travels well, and seems to enjoy going camping with us. But… he prefers to stay inside, all the outside noises scare him. Becky and her husband Keith, have two more Alpine reject kitties, “Albert” (Einstein’s brother, well sort of), and “Newton”. They all have famous names because they are extra smart. Becky and Keith also have just recently acquired a dog, "Bear-Dog"… my new grandson.
