Intern and Cooperative Education Programs:
Internship FAQ
Q: I would like to apply for an internship
at GM R&D. How do I submit my resume?
A: The best way to submit your resume for an internship is by
meeting with a representative of the GM Recruiting Team during
a regularly scheduled campus visit. You'll be able to submit
your resume, ask questions about the program, and establish
a personal contact who will keep you informed throughout the
intern hiring process. To determine if and when the GM Recruiting
Team will visit your campus, see the University
Recruiting Calendar.
If your school is not on the schedule or
you cannot meet with the GM Recruiting Team, then you can
submit your resume online. Please put the exact words "Summer
Internship with GM R&D" in the objective box when
you Apply
Online.
Q: What is the latest date that I can
submit my resume?
A: We would like to receive all resumes by 30 November.
Q: Once I have submitted my resume, what
is the next step in the hiring process?
A: In December, the GM R&D Recruiting Team begins comparing
the academic qualifications of each candidate with the requirements
for the available summer internships. If the Recruiting Team
finds a match, we will contact you to set up an interview.
Q: If I am contacted for an interview,
where will the interview be and who will conduct it?
A: A professional staff member from one of our Research Labs
will conduct the interview by phone.
Q: When will the interviews be conducted?
A: We try to conduct all interviews in December and January.
Q: When will I learn whether or not I
will be offered a position?
A: We plan to make each successful candidate an internship
offer by the end of February.
Q: If I receive an internship offer,
how long do I have to accept or reject it?
A: We generally request that you accept or reject an internship
offer with 2 weeks.
Q: If I accept the internship offer,
what happens next?
A: After you accept the offer, our Human Resources Department
will contact you. They will discuss the details of your internship
(required paperwork, housing, travel expenses, and so forth)
and will answer any questions you have.
A staff member from the Research Lab where
you will be working will also contact you. He or she will
discuss the details of your work project.
Q: When will my internship begin?
A: GM requires that an internship last at least 10 weeks but
recommends 12 weeks to achieve the greatest benefit from the
assignment. Usually, GM interns begin working in May and stay
until August or September. PhD students may work a maximum
of six months, depending on their coursework and dissertation
progress.
Q. How does GM R&D determine which
project I work on? How can I prepare for it?
A. Each fall, R&D hiring managers provide Human Resources
with their top priority projects for summer interns. In many
cases, R&D is working on the project jointly with a university
and the student is already involved in the research. To prepare
for your internship, we suggest you speak with your mentor
or supervisor prior to your arrival at the R&D Center.
Q. How often will I be paid?
GM pays students twice each month: on the 15th and on the
last day of the month (or on the Friday before if these days
fall on a weekend).
Q. Does GM provide housing assistance?
A. Once you accept an internship offer, we will send housing
information to you. If you require housing, you have the option
to accept GM-paid housing, which comes fully equipped with
furniture, linens, dishes, and basic utilities. We match graduate
students with one other roommate and undergraduates with three
other roommates. If you do not elect GM-paid housing, you
are responsible for making and paying for your housing arrangements.
Q. Where is GM-paid housing located?
A. Generally the apartment complexes are located in suburbs
close to Warren, MI, such as Utica or Troy.
Q. Will I need a car while working at
GM R&D?
Transportation while working at GM R&D is your responsibility.
GM does not provide transportation and most GM-paid housing
is not within walking distance of the R&D Center. Be aware
that the Detroit metro area has limited public transportation.
You will receive carpool and car rental information in your
offer packages.
Q. Does GM pay for travel expenses?
A. GM offers a Travel Lump Sum for roundtrip travel expenses
from your school to our work site based on mileage. You can
use this money as you see fit - for fare by air, train, or
bus; gas for your personal vehicle; or a rental truck. Any
travel expenses you incur that exceed the lump sum are your
responsibility.
Q. Does GM offer opportunities
to participate in activities or socialize with other interns?
A. GM R&D's Student Program Coordinator organizes plant
tours, information sessions, and events during work hours
for students. Some of these events include other functions,
such as OnStar, Powertrain, or Purchasing. Social activities
include student picnics, networking events, and meet-and-greets
at apartment complexes. Most events are held during work hours,
not in the evenings or on weekends.
