Intern and Cooperative Education Programs: Details

In 2002, the GM Research Intern Program included 38 students: 27 Ph.D. candidates, 7 Master's students, and 4 undergraduates. We also have 8 Cooperative Education students who return every three months throughout their undergraduate programs at Kettering University.

Intern Program

The GM Research Intern Program typically consists of a 3- to 4-month assigment from May to August at the GM R&D Center in Warren, Michigan. Students not only experience challenging work assignments, they also have the opportunity to network with students working in other GM areas, such as Powertrain, Product Development, and Manufacturing. Depending on the availability, students participate in manufacturing plant tours, student picnics, and a variety of social events.

Cooperative Education Program
Co-op students are undergraduates who explore career options in a variety of areas while continuing their class schedules. The hands-on, practical experience makes it easier to decide on a specific career direction while the income can help to defray some educational expenses. Also, a variety of benefits are available for GM Co-op students.

Program Requirements
To participate in these programs, you must currently be enrolled as a full-time student and be returning to a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited university. In most cases, you must have completed at least your freshman year. We also ask that you present evidence of academic excellence and leadership potential, and have established personal goals leading toward a career in Engineering, Manufacturing, Research, or Business.

Selection
For both programs, selection is based on student credentials, successful completion of assessment tools, and matching of student skills to available openings. We hire students from schools all across the country, including Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Howard, MIT, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, and the Universities of Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin. We hire engineers and scientists with a variety of backgrounds, including disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial, computer, and materials/metallurgy, plus physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Our students work on emerging technologies like fuel cells, work systems, lithium ion batteries, and nanocrystalline structures.

Student Assistance
General Motors will provide both undergraduate and graduate students in our Intern or Cooperative Education programs with GM-paid housing. General Motors Student Assistance (GMSA) has been sanctioned to work with students requesting housing to locate pre-approved apartment options near the R&D Center in Warren, Michigan. Students who do not wish to participate in the GM-paid housing program will be responsible for all housing costs incurred.

Transportation
Students are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from the work site on a daily basis. GMSA can provide information to students regarding carpools, rental cars, and public transportation.

Travel lump sum
The travel lump sum provides relocating students with a pre-determined dollar amount based upon the mileage traveled round trip between the city where they attend school and Warren, MI, provided the minimum mileage requirement is met.
