Plenty of sunshine joined 18 riders in Glenwood, led by Len Rolph. As the first Chapter ride of the year, we had some new faces, fresh horses and a great day in the saddle. A few photos tell the story. Top center: Len Rolph relaxes after guiding the group to Outlook Falls. Rrightphoto: Duane and Marlene Dewey get some sun. Top left: President Craig Schuster ambles through the brush. Bottom center: Jim Pence, Jim Hill, Jim Rich, Dona Schuster and Craig Schuster take a few moments to settle the world’s problems.

Ride Report May 20, 2007 Adler & Hale Ride, Barbecue and Auction

Gray skies and a little rain failed to dampen the spirits at May’s Chapter Ride, hosted by Helmut & Darlene Adler, and Larry & Phyllis Hale. About 35 people attended, as riders chose between two rides — “Scenic” and “The Challenge.”

The Scenic Ride was a pretty trail with wildflowers and hillside views. Riders encountered stations with envelopes fluttering on a clothesline, waiting to be collected. The Challenge was also lovely, but riders had to earn their poker cards by completing tasks such as riding through a narrow trail festooned with plastic bags, pinwheels and other spooky devices, or riding over a plastic tarp. Five challenges tested riders’ ability to convince their horses to do things that most horses, left to their own devices, would prefer to avoid. Some riders had to patiently explain to their trusty steeds that the llamas were not going to eat them, and that sidling up to the llama pen to collect envelopes was a good thing. Other horses were clearly mystified by their riders’ requests to walk through a long, narrow mud puddle even though perfectly dry land was nearby. You could almost hear the horses mutter, “Well, okay, I’ll do it, but I think you’ve lost your mind!”

Once everyone finished the ride, riders opened their envelopes to determine who won prizes for the best poker hands. Scenic Ride winners were Jim Hill (first), Jim Rich, and Kay Hill. On the Challenge Ride, Don Vandenberg Jr. took first, then Lance Monagon and Connie Baugher. Winners of the general drawing were Gene Baugher, Myrna Loy and Amy Henderson. Thanks to Casa El Mirador and the Lyle Hotel for donating part or all of their gift certificates. Other prizes included BCHW baseball hats and large BCHW silhouette stickers.

Meanwhile, people enjoyed the barbecue (burgers, brats and heavenly lamb) and the amazing potluck of side dishes and desserts. The variety and quality were almost overwhelming. People also strolled past the silent auction items and placed their bids (and in some cases, counter-bids!). Wines, tack, horse décor, and other fun things (such as Connie’s famous dilled beans) brought in over $350 for the state organization. Thanks to everyone who donated an item and placed bids. Eventually the sun came out and people took off their rain jackets, then had another slice of lamb or pie.

Darlene, Helmut, Phyllis & Larry did a wonderful job organizing a first-rate event. From the organized parking, to the extremely well-marked trail, to the sheltered tables loaded with food and silent auction items — obviously a lot of thought and planning went into a remarkable event. We are fortunate that the Adlers and Hales worked so hard and spent so much time to ensure that everyone would have a great day.
